Deep Tissue Massage
in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Muscle tension, old injuries, and chronic pain don't go away on their own. Deep tissue massage at Elite Spa Utah is designed to address the source — not just the surface.
Tension Has Layers.
So Does the Treatment.
Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic technique that uses slow, deliberate strokes and firm pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle tissue and connective tissue (fascia). Unlike a relaxation massage, it targets the source of tension rather than just the surface.
When muscles are chronically tense or injured, they can form adhesions — dense bands of painful tissue — that block circulation, limit range of motion, and cause persistent pain. Deep tissue massage works to break down those adhesions, restore blood flow, and allow the muscles to function properly again.
At Elite Spa Utah, every deep tissue session starts with a thorough intake to understand your pain points, history, and goals — so treatment is focused where your body needs it most.
Chronic Back Pain
Lower back tension is the most common complaint we treat — with lasting results.
Neck & Shoulder Tension
Desk work and stress accumulate here. We release the knots systematically.
Sports Injuries
Strains, overuse, and tight IT bands respond exceptionally well to deep tissue work.
Leg & Hip Tightness
Hip flexors, hamstrings, and piriformis tension that impacts your posture and gait.
Stress & Fatigue
Chronic stress lives in the body. Deep tissue releases the physical grip it has on you.
Scar Tissue
Old injuries and surgical scars can restrict movement — deep tissue helps break it down.

Deep Tissue + Hot Stone
Heated basalt stones soften and relax muscle tissue before deep work begins, allowing therapists to reach deeper layers with less discomfort and greater effect.

Our most comprehensive session. Two hours of full-body deep tissue work — every major muscle group addressed, every adhesion worked through systematically.
How Deep Tissue Work
Actually Works
01
Myofascial Release
Sustained pressure applied to the fascia — the connective tissue surrounding every muscle — to release restrictions and restore natural mobility and range of motion.
02
Trigger Point Therapy
Isolated pressure applied directly to hyperirritable muscle knots — the source of referred pain that can radiate far from the actual problem area.
03
Cross-Fiber Friction
Transverse strokes across muscle fibers break down adhesions and scar tissue that standard techniques can't reach, restoring normal tissue alignment.
04
Stripping
Deep gliding pressure along the full length of a muscle fiber, releasing chronic tension patterns and improving circulation through the entire muscle belly.
05
Neuromuscular Therapy
Addresses the relationship between the nervous system and muscular function — correcting imbalances that cause postural pain and recurring tension patterns.
06
Passive Stretching
Integrated into the session to lengthen treated muscles while they're warm and receptive — extending the effects of deep tissue work and improving flexibility.
Your Body Takes a Lot. We Know.
Athletes
Whether you're training for a race or just staying active, regular deep tissue work keeps your body performing and recovering at its best.
Desk Workers
Hours of sitting create specific, predictable patterns of tension in the neck, upper back, and hips that deep tissue is uniquely suited to address.
Manual Workers
Construction, trades, nursing — physically demanding jobs put real strain on the body. Deep tissue helps undo the daily accumulation before it becomes chronic.
Chronic Pain Sufferers
If you've been living with persistent pain and haven't found lasting relief, a targeted series of deep tissue sessions may be exactly what your body needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
about Deep Tissue Massage
Everything you need to know before booking your first deep tissue session at Elite Spa Utah.
Deep tissue massage can involve some discomfort — often described as a "good hurt" — as the therapist works through tense, knotted tissue. It should never feel sharp, unbearable, or cause you to tense up. Our therapists check in throughout the session and adjust pressure based on your feedback. You're always in control.
Swedish massage uses light to medium pressure with long gliding strokes focused on relaxation and circulation. Deep tissue massage uses significantly more pressure, slower strokes, and specific techniques to target deeper muscle layers and connective tissue. Swedish is great for stress relief; deep tissue is the choice when you have actual pain or a specific physical issue to resolve.
Some clients experience mild post-session soreness for 24–48 hours, similar to the feeling after a good workout. This is completely normal and a sign that the tissue is responding. Drinking plenty of water after your session helps flush metabolic byproducts and reduces next-day soreness significantly.
Many clients notice significant relief after just one session, especially for acute tension. Chronic issues typically respond best to a series of 4–6 sessions spaced 1–2 weeks apart. We'll give you an honest assessment after your first visit.
Deep tissue massage is not recommended for people with blood clots, active inflammation, recent surgery, fractures, or certain skin conditions. If you have a medical condition or are pregnant, please consult your doctor before booking. During your intake, we'll go over any contraindications and modify your session or recommend an alternative if needed.
Hydrate well before your appointment, avoid eating a large meal within an hour of your session, and come ready to communicate openly about your pain levels and any areas you want us to focus on or avoid. Arrive a few minutes early to complete your intake form without feeling rushed.
